A jewel of a city set among seven sweeping hills and close to some stunning fjords, Bergen is Norway’s second-largest city. A lively university town, Bergen is steeped in culture and offers an inspiring mix of the ancient and the modern. The city is pleasantly compact and features a labyrinth of cobblestone streets as well as green and verdant areas perfect for rest and relaxation.

Begin your day with a trip to the Torget, Bergen’s renowned fish market located on the waterfront. Here your senses will be assailed by the sights, sounds and aromas of this bustling and exciting commercial centre. Sample some of the produce by purchasing the tasty seafood snacks available or just sit and watch the activity of the fishermen and merchants whose routines have changed little over the centuries. Pay a visit to the waterfront at Bryggen. Formerly a wharf area for sailors and merchants, the area has been transformed into an impressive complex of timber buildings housing museums, some fine restaurants and art and crafts shops. The Hanseatic Museum is located nearby in a remarkable 16th-century rough timber building. This fascinating museum offers an insight into the life of the Hanseatic merchant sailors and apprentices and features some intriguing reconstructions and interactive features. Enjoy a commanding view of the harbour area by taking a trip up Rosenkrantz Tower or hop on board a quaint railway train to the top of Mount Flogen for an even more impressive vista of Bergen. Enjoy a trip to the Bergen Aquarium and marvel at its huge outdoor tank, supplemented by some 70 indoor tanks that are home to some amazing freshwater fish. Take a day to savour the atmosphere and examine the life and times of Norway’s most famous composer Edvard Grieg at his summer home in Troldhaugen. This residence has been converted into a museum while the surrounding grounds feature a 200-seater concert hall staging events all year round. Bergen itself could be considered the musical capital of Norway, as it is home to one of the world’s oldest symphony orchestras and hosts a multitude of international music and cultural events throughout the year.

Enjoy a drink in one of the city’s many lively and infectious bars before indulging in an evening of musical entertainment at one of several music venues.
